It's official: Rolling Stones, the world-famous British rock 'n' roll band, was rolling into China. The four-member group performed in Shanghai on April 1 and in Beijing on April 4, 2004. The shows were part of the band's 40th anniversary tour and it was their first time in the country.
Their performance put rock music in the spotlight in China for the first time, although, this type of music was introduced in the late 1980s by the country's most famous rocker Cui Jian.
Rock 'n' roll became popular in the US in the early 1950s. It has many roots: black guitar-accompanied blues and country and western music.
The main instruments of this early music were guitar, piano, drums, and saxophone(萨克斯管).
American singer Elvis Presley and British band the Beatles were important figures in the development of rock music. Presley attracted young audiences in the early 1960s with his body movement and unusually new style of playing.
The Beatles were a group of four young men who reached fame in 1962. They began a return to the blues side of rock 'n' roll. But they played even louder and more electric forms.
Punk rock is another kind of rock music. It began in the mid-1970s. The music is marked by fast-beat songs. Famous punk rock bands are the Clash and Black Flag.
Heavy metal is also rooted in rock 'n' roll. This is a combination of loud screaming and crazy guitar bashing(重击). The famed bands of this music are Metallica and Black Sabbath.
The change and growth of rock music is mainly pushed forward by young people.
Rock 'n' roll is typically loved by youth because of its exciting dance beat and its simple lyrics(歌词)that speak of social problems. The melody(曲调)is clearly laid down by electric guitar.
All aspects of the music — its heavy beat, loudness and self-absorbed lyrics — suggest a youthful rebellion against mainstream(主流的)values.
