    2. Background information
    (1)Jefferson and the French Revolution
Jefferson served as a minister to France from 1785 to 1788 when revolution imminent in France. He sympathized with the revolution, feeling it was similar in purpose to the American Revolution. Thanks to his political writings and his legal reforms in Virginia, French reformers regarded Jefferson as a champion of liberty. Lafayette, who had fought for American Independence, and other advocates of democratic principles often sought his advice.
    (2) The Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in the history of the USA and of the world as well. It was drafted by Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) and adopted with a number of minor changes on July 4,1776, by the representatives of the 13 colonies at the second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. In this public document the colonists in America solemnly proclaim their independence from British rule. It marked the beginning of a new nation-the United States of America, and hence July 4 has become the national birthday.
