THE MANAGEMENT OF URETERAL UROLITHIASIS – CMPARISON BETWEEN SHOCK WAVE LITHOTRIPSY AND HOLMIUM: YTTRIUMALUMINUM-GARNET LITHOTRIPSY

Chiu Department of Urology, Taipei City Hospital, Zhongxiao Branch Department of Urology, National Yang-Ming University, Taipei, Taiwan Purpose: To compare the clinical outcome of shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) and holmium: yttriumaluminum-garnet (Ho-YAG) laser lithotripsy for the management of ureteral stone. Patients and methods: From January 2005 to December 2005, total 313 patients with ureteral stone were enrolled into this study. Retrospective chart review was used for data collection. There were 191 patients received SWL treatment in an outpatient basis. There were 122 patients received uretroscopic lithotripsy in an inpatient basis and one 6/7.5Fr. semirigid ureteroscope with Ho-YAG laser was used. The stone size, success rate, postoperative complications, and cost were evaluated in each group. Results: The mean age was 48.6 years old in this study. The first stone free rate was 86.9% in the SWL group while 75.9 % in the Ho-YAG group. The average cost was lower in the Ho-YAG group. There was no postoperative complications could be found in both groups. Conclusion: Holmium-YAG laser lithotripsy appears to be one of the treatment modalities for the management of ureteral stone. However, a larger scale study is warranted for further elucidation of this method.
