In this thesis, we apply the ABC approach to the Web Services business system development, in which the business process is employed as a very important architecture artifact of the Web Services business system, guiding the system development through the whole software lifecycle. There are some differences between the ABC approach to Web Services composition and to component composition on
inter-enterprise autonomous middleware platform. So, it needs some adaptations and extensions when used for Web Services composition, such as Web Services description standards , composition standards and Web Services orchestration. To realize the automated Web Services business system composition, the process engine must be provided, which can interpret the process models and execute the script automatically. Such extended ABC approach can utilize the application system development on inter-enterprise autonomous middleware platform, and provide a unified method to guiding the system development on inter-enterprise platform by or intra-enterprise and runtime

infrastructure support. Finally, we implements a prototype process engine which is integrated with PKUAS and compatible with BPEL4WS1.1. The engine supports all the activities defined in the BPEL4WS standard

and provides the lifecycle management for the activities. The engine can also provide the mechanisms of process instance routing, fault handler and compensation handler for Web Services business process system. Further more, the engine implements the extensible service framework using the interceptor pattern, which provides the dynamic invocation of services and improves the adaptability and extensibility of the engine.
