Argumentation and Cognitive Change in Collaborative Problem-Solving Dialogues

    ABSTRACT
Three hypotheses concerning relations between argumentation and cognitive change belief revision, externalization/reflection, and knowledge co-construction - are examined by qualitative analysis of collaborative problem-solving interactions in physics. The method used combines a dialogic logic model of argumentation with belief revision models, and extends the approach to incorporate epistemic and interactive dimensions. Analysis showed no direct relation between argumentation outcomes and belief revisions. Argumentations are always resolved by refutation, and their outcomes determine the 'collectively valid', sometimes in spite of disbelief. Belief revisions depend on the justificational structure of externalized propositions and are successfully predicted by an extended coherence model. Three possible mechanisms of cognitive change are identified : elimination of 'flawed' proposals, widening of the epistemic field, and knowledge negotiation. In conclusion it is argued that the study of cognitive change in interaction requires taking into account several levels of attitudes, including commitments, acceptances and - finally - beliefs.
