November1,2005 DearStudent, TheSummerLaboratoryScienceProgramatMayoClinicofferschemistry andhuman biological sciencemajorstheopportunitytoexplorecareeroptionsandgainexperiencein theclinicallaboratoryenvironment.Clinicallaboratoryworkisdifferentfromresearch workinthatapatient'sdiagnosis,treatment,andhealthmaybedirectlydependentuponthe laboratorytestingresults. Ourscientistsarepartofaninterdisciplinaryteamofhealthcareprofessionalsdedicatedto patients'health.Inthelaboratory,ourscientistsworkwithblood,tissue,andbodyfluid specimens.Theyperformtestsfromthesimpletothecomplex,usingmanualmethodsand stateoftheartinstruments,andareresponsiblefortheaccuracyoftheresultsthey generate. AsaSummerLaboratoryScienceProgramparticipant,youwillworkinoneofourclinical testinglaboratoriesspecializingintheareasofbiochemistry,immunology,microbiology, genetics,andhematopathology.Youwillassistour laboratorypersonnelinaliquotting, preparing,extracting,andcentrifugingbiologicalspecimenscollectedfrompatients.This isnotaresearchprogram. ToparticipateintheSummerLaboratoryScienceProgram,youmustbecompletingyour junioryearofafouryearbaccalaureateprograminbiology,chemistry,clinicallaboratory science,microbiology,molecularbiology,moleculargenetics,orotherbiomedicalscience relatedfield.
th Theprogramis12weeksinlengthandbeginsJune7thandendsonAugust25 .Thereis thepossibilityofextendingemploymentinAugust.Applicationsaredueby March15th, 2006.Theassignmentsarefulltime,40hours/week,atanapproximatewageof $12.44/hour. YoumaychoosetoresideatEvanstonHeightswhichispartiallysubsidized byMayoClinicorchoosetoprovideyourownhousing.
