MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF HEALTH SERVICES TheconceptofEssentialMedicinescanbetracedbacktotheNon‐Aligned SummitConferenceheldinSriLankain1976.Theconferenceadopteda specialresolutionondrugs,whichincludedtheideathatalistofthemost Essential Medicines be compiled. The World Health Organization publisheditsfirstlistin1977. ThisisthefourthrevisionoftheEssentialMedicinesListwhichwasfirst published in 1985 and it is aimed at supplying safe, effective drugs of acceptablequalitytothepeopleofSriLankaataffordableprices. We are grateful to expert committee involved in the compilation of the lists of medicines for the valuable inputs made by members and to the WorldHealthOrganization(WHO)forthefinancialassistanceprovided forprintingthisbooklet. I would gladly welcome comments on any shortcomings in this documentwhichcouldbemadeusetoimprovethenextrevision.
