    Module 14
The Body Remembers; Dealing with Feelings
    14a Content and Comments
Ideally in every training and in every counselling relationship attention should be paid to the fact that human beings do not just have a body, they are a body, with feelings and physical reactions to whatever happens to them. In people who are traumatized normal body reactions may have changed in a way that the survivors themselves do not understand, and neither do the care workers who are not trained on this issue. In this module we offer some clues to the relation between body and emotions, for traumatized and non-traumatized people. Most professional care workers are trained in counselling clients on a verbal level, and 'bodywork' usually has not been part of their training. This module is meant to give care workers an idea what they could do with body awareness, both for themselves, and for their clients. (Some special attention is paid to doing body exercises with participants with a disability, although this subject deserves a special module) Another part of the module is dedicated to 'dealing with feelings', also both for care workers themselves and for clients. We believe that bodywork should not be done with clients unless a care worker has some experience her/himself with being a trainee. Some of the exercises may seem simple, none the less they may bring up strong emotional responses. In our opinion the part on 'dealing with feelings' should be standard for every care worker. We think that every care worker should at least have some idea about what trauma is doing to people on a physical level. This module can be integrated in parts in other training's, if at least one of the trainers is familiar with the techniques, or it can be given as a separate training by an experienced trainer.
