31st May 2007, South Lake Club Tianjin Topic: City Planning under the New Perspective of Tianjin's Status as Economic Hub of Northern China Chair: Augustin von der Lühe | Managing Director - Germa-tech (Tianjin) Ltd; Jutta Ludwig | Executive Director – GCC Beijing Speaker: Lü Yongquan | Vice President - Tianjin City Planning Institute More than 50 entrepreneurs from Tianjin and Beijing gathered to learn more about the future development of the coastal city. Tianjin is the third largest urban region in China after Shanghai and Beijing. In 2006, the State Council included the development of the Tianjin Binhai New Area (TBNA) in its overall strategy for developing China. Mr Lü Yongquan gave a comprehensive overview of the plan, which comprises the period through 2020. His speech comprised the following points: Development of two major city centres: Tianjin city centre and Tanggu centre. Construction of one west-east axis, connecting Wuqing district, Tianjin city centre, Tanggu centre, two belts, an eastern coastal development belt, and a western town belt.

Development of five major industrial parks: Wuqing Development Area, Beichen Development Area, the High-tech Industry Park, Jinghai Development Area, and Xiqing Development Area. Development of the city's infrastructure with special focus on the subway and expressway system. Improvement of the water supply system. Improvement of the ecological situation of the city, by building a green belt around the urban area, an ecological corridor along Haihe River, and an ecological protection belt in the coastal area. Special focus is being devoted to the Haihe River. Ten major projects along the river with a total investment of RBM 19.62bn are planned.
