Department of History at LSU provided aid for a research trip and the Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table awarded me a timely scholarship. As an undergraduate at Clemson University, Paul Anderson first placed the idea of graduate school in my head and has been a continual source of advice and friendship, not to mention good-natured heckling. At LSU, William Cooper and Paul Paskoff have shown me humor, wit, and a sense of professionalism I never knew existed. My advisor, Gaines Foster, has patiently trudged through many poor drafts and has been more than generous with his time, counsel, and company. This thesis is much better because of their insights, though any faults remain my own. Several fellow graduate students at LSU have been amazingly supportive, and have reaffirmed my decision to enter graduate school. Leanna Smith, Matt Hernando, Josh Marr, and Greg Beaman have all suffered through the highs and lows, but after many sittings at the Chimes, we managed. Special thanks must go to Chris Childers. His enthusiasm for history and his propensity for life-changing experiences have been infectious. Tommy Huycke, Patrick McKinney, and Zack Vernon have remained the truest of friends. My family has always been extremely supportive, and the past two years prove that their generosity is limitless. My sister and brother-in-law, Jessi and Jason Englert, have been wonderful sources of good cheer and humor. My younger brothers, Madison and Andrew Freel, have been the greatest source of pride that any older brother could ask for. My parents, Kevin and Jane Pratt, and Linda and Randy Freel, have supported me all of my life; everything I am reflects the values they instilled in me from a young age.
