Homeowners have to fight to keep mitigation credits

Florida's insurance landscape is full of pitfalls for consumers these days — skyrocketing premiums and ever-increasing limits on coverage and claims, to name a few — but there is at least one area where policyholders still have some control: mitigation. Sarasota Herald-Tribune reporter Paige St. John spoke to a rapt audience in Key West about the topics covered by her Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting on Florida's insurance industry. The veteran reporter was impressed with the level of engagement and interest in topics as dense as reinsurance and risk modeling. "They were the most informed audience I have ever spoken to when it comes to property insurance," said St. John, who was at the Casa Marina Resort on Wednesday evening at the behest of the Key West Chamber of Commerce, which presented the free event. "They are pretty well aware of the current threat, which is to the mitigation discounts," St. John said. Mitigation discounts lower insurance premiums for storm-ready features such as impact-resistant windows, hurricane shutters and hip roofs. Those discounts can really add up, shaving as much as 30 percent to 50 percent from Keys homeowners' windstorm premiums. Those mitigation credits, mandated by the Florida
