Technology Fast 500 Deloitte & Touche A Year of Regaining Momentum Defying a year of dour business headlines, the 500 companies on the 2002 Deloitte & Touche Technology Fast 500 list proved their tenacity by staying steadfast on the growth curve. To our surprise, the five companies topping the Fast 500 make a partic- ularly strong statement in a tough environment for technology compa- nies. They enjoyed an average rev- enue growth rate over five years of 196,763 percent—more than twice the 93,496 percent average growth rate of last year's top five. Needless to say, it is a challenge to maintain that level of growth today. Revenues for the Fast 500 as a whole grew by an aver- age of 6,772 percent. The average revenue growth for last year's winners was 6,184 percent over five years. The Deloitte & Touche Technology Fast 500 recognizes North America's fastest-growing technology companies in terms of revenue growth over five years. This year's leader is ITXC Corp., a provider of international phone-to-phone call completion services. The Princeton, N.J.- based company racked up revenues totaling $173,220,000 in 2001, up 293,493 percent from its 1997 revenues of $59,000. In second place, with 2001 revenues of $491,232,000 and a 191,788 percent growth rate over five years is Extreme Networks, Inc. a Santa Clara, Calif. Ethernet switch maker. Cray, Inc., the company that pioneered supercom- puting technology in the 1970s, took the number-three spot by posting a 180,450 percent revenue jump. And, in a year when the telecom- munications industry is on the ropes, it's worth noting that ITXC is joined by three other commu- nications firms in the top five. In fourth-place is wireless pioneer Openwave Systems Inc., with a revenue gain over five years of 159,235 percent, while fifth-place Universal Access, a connectivity services com- pany, saw a 158,847 percent increase. Last year the industry mix reflected the rise of the Internet econo- my. Four of last year's top five companies were Internet compa- nies, led by Internet auctioneer eBay which posted a 115,874 percent growth rate. This year eBay reported a more modest 12,937 percent revenue boost from 1997 to 2001, for a 36th place ranking on the 2002 Fast 500 list. Fast Highlights Like last year, software companies dominate the list, making up 48 percent of the 2002 Fast 500 companies. The next most common sector is life sciences (which last year was biotech/medical) at 16 percent. Communications/networking firms represent 15 percent of the companies while 10 percent consist of Internet companies. Semiconductor/equipment companies and computers/peripherals firms accounted for 7 and 4 percent, respectively. Also echoing last year's list is the 2002 geographical break- down. Thirty-six percent of the companies hail from the West, with California home to 149 companies, more than any other state. The Deloitte & Touche Technology Fast 500 list is the result of research on technology companies. Sources for public and private companies that make the list include public company databases, Deloitte & Touche's 20 regional Technology Fast 50 programs in North America and direct nominations. To be eligible for the Technology Fast 500, a company must meet the following criteria: 1. Be a technology company, defined as a com- pany that owns proprietary technology that contributes to a significant portion of the company's operating revenues, or devotes a high percentage of effort to research and development of technology. 2. Meet minimum operating revenue requirements: ? 1997 operating revenues must be at least $50,000 USD or $75,000 CD. ? 2001operating revenues must be at least $1 million USD and CD. 3. Be in business a minimum of five years. 4. Sixty-five percent of this year's companies are public— a group that fares better in average revenue growth than their privately-held counterparts. The public companies grew by an average of 9,233 percent compared to 2,201 percent for the private companies. And finally, fourteen of this year's Fast 500 companies boast revenues of over $1 billion in 2001. Nextel Communications, which placed 361, was the highest at $7 . 7 billion. An Eight-Time Winner While several companies make a return appearance in the 2002 Fast 500 rankings, one company stands out by earning a spot on the list every year since the Fast 500 was established in 1995: VERITAS Software Corporation. VERITAS, founded in 1989, is a leading provider of storage management software for data protection, application availability and disaster recov- ery. VERITAS ranks 312 on this year's list for its 1,132 percent growth rate. Cray earned the number-three spot on this year's Fast 500 list. The company saw 2001 revenues of $133,607,000 and 180,450 percent revenue growth over five years. The original Cray Research, founded in 1972, all but disappeared from the high performance computing (HPC) landscape after Silicon Graphics acquired the company in 1996. In 2000, Seattle's Tera Computer Company acquired the Cray assets from Silicon Graphics and promptly renamed the combined company Cray Inc. With an order backlog expected to top $100 million by the end of 2002, Cray is starting to look like the HPC pioneer that first popularized the word "supercomputer," and not a moment too soon. In April 2002, Japan's government-funded Earth Simulator machine powered by NEC's SX-6 computers rocked the U.S. HPC community with speeds as fast as the top 20 U.S. supercomputers combined. Cray is the exclusive distributor in North America of NEC's SX-6 system. According to CEO James Rottsolk, "Today Cray is the only company in the United States, and arguably the world, able to design supercomputers that can tackle the toughest types of problems in government, industry and basic science. Our new Cray X1 system will have rated performance of up to 50 trillion calculations per second and is already building a strong order backlog. By 2010, we expect to deliver supercomputers able to operate at a sustained rate of a petaflop, or 1,000 trillion calculations per second." "Cray is the only company capable of recapturing strategically important computing speed leadership for the United States," said Rottsolk. "We're confident our product roadmap will accomplish that." After Extreme Networks was launched six years ago, the company didn't wait for its Ethernet network switching solutions to take off in its own backyard. Instead, the company immediately launched a marketing effort in Asia and Europe. It was a strategy that ultimately helped propel Extreme Networks to the number-two spot on the 2002 Technology Fast 500 list. After earning $256,000 in 1997, Extreme Networks' revenues shot up to $491,232,000 in 2001. The company enjoyed a five-year growth rate of 191,788 percent. According to Gordon Stitt, CEO and co-founder of Extreme Networks, going global early on was a practical way to reduce risk. "Our choices were to diversify to different products and technologies while remaining in a single geographic market, or stay with a single technology and market in multiple countries. We felt we could achieve the diversification we needed by going overseas," he said. Stitt also attributes his company's success to staying focused on its target markets and core technologies, and being committed to technology investing and R&D. Extreme Networks has made its mark in the Ethernet LAN market and Ethernet metro service markets (mostly broadband providers) with what it calls a "simplified approach" to switching technology. "We figured out how to deliver the benefits of ATM—a complex switching technology that is hard to install—using the simpler Ethernet technology. We've carried that theme throughout our business: If we keep things simple, we can reduce operating costs for our customers," he said. Extreme Networks' ongoing global presence has helped it weather the recent U.S. economic slowdown. The company now looks forward to moving into a strong number-two position behind Cisco in the large enterprise market. Said Stitt, "I expect to see more consolidation in our industry. It will be a great opportunity for us to solidify our position as the clear alternative." 1ne 2wo 3hree Cray Inc. Extreme Networks, Inc. ITXC, one of the largest wholesale telephone companies in the world, started life in 1997 with a modest $59,000 in revenues. By 2002, ITXC grew its revenues to $173,220,000 for an astounding increase of 293,493 percent. That performance placed ITXC at the top of this year's Fast 500. ITXC has managed to find the silver linings among the clouds that currently shadow its industry. "The turmoil in the telecom industry makes people overlook the fact that people all over the world are making more calls and talking longer," said CEO and founder Tom Evslin. "The fact that most other companies in the industry are drowning in their own debt has actually made it easier for us to grow since we have plenty of cash and are virtually debt free." The company uses the Internet to transport its calls to over 160 countries. Using the Internet enabled ITXC to become a major internation- al carrier without going into debt for billions of dollars to build its own ITXC Corp. That doesn't mean that the company hasn't struggled. "When we started, no one believed 'voice over the Internet' could deliver the quality customers were used to," said Evslin. "We invented and patented a technology that allows us to manage the quality of the calls traveling over the Internet. Our customers, who include all of the major carriers in the United States and many major carriers worldwide, get the economic advantage of our huge, Internet-based network; their customers, the callers, get the quality they expect from a name-brand carrier." According to TeleGeography 2001, about 8 percent of international calls go over IP networks. By 2010, Evslin expects that number to reach nearly 100 percent. Last year, about 2 percent of all international calls traveled over ITXC's network according to company estimates. "There's a huge addressable market for us in the remaining 92 percent," he said. Today Openwave provides technology to more than 85 mobile operators, 45 handset manufacturers, and is present in over 204 million mobile data enabled handsets. This worldwide reach helped the company achieve fourth place on this year's Fast 500 list. The company's growth rate over five years was 159,235 percent. The Redwood City, Calif.-based Openwave earned $465,258,000 in revenues in 2001— quite a jump from its 1997 revenues of $292,000. Openwave's software has enabled mobile operators to transition from voice-only services to delivering voice and data services on consumer's mobile phones. This turns every day mobile phones, formerly only used for verbal conversations, into customizable personal communi- cations appliances. With Openwave technology, consumers can now exchange instant text and photo messages, play games and use location services, such as e911 emergency services, on mobile phones. Openwave was a key driver in leading the effort to bring consolida- tion to the wireless standards space through the formation of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). The primary goal of this organization is to drive the adoption of standards specifications to further an open architectural frame- work for advanced mobile services. Industry players—handset manufacturers, mobile operators, systems integrators, content and application providers and Openwave— are all working together to move the mobile data industry forward. As of June 2002 there were more than 100 million active mobile Internet users worldwide. According to Openwave, this is still a developing market. And, with Japan leading the way, there are tremendous opportunities ahead around the world. 4our Openwave Systems Inc. When bottlenecks threaten to stall traffic on the networks of telecommunications carriers like AT&T and Bell Canada/BCE, they turn to Universal Access to clear the way. Using its own database to view the layout and availability of nearly every major carrier, Universal Access interconnects the networks of the competing global carriers to alleviate bottlenecks and allow voice and data traffic to reach its destination. The growing demand for this service has propelled Universal Access to the number-five spot on this year's Fast 500 list. The company gener- ated revenues of $122,389,000 in 2001— a 158,847 percent jump from its 1997 revenues of $77,000. "One reason we grew at a high percentage is that we deliver the efficiency our customers need," said Patrick Shutt, co-founder and CEO of Universal Access. "The industry is highly fragmented. Being able to navigate it for your customers adds great value." Fortunately, Universal Access had begun diversifying its customer base a year earlier. Instead of only focusing on carriers, Universal Access has also pursued Internet service providers, telecommunications service providers and the U.S. government. The company also did some restructuring to trim costs. Said Shutt, "We're stabilizing revenues and reducing our cost structure in what could have been a catastrophic time. I'm proud of what our team has done to keep us on the right course." Universal Access expects to be in high demand again when the troubled carriers come out of bankruptcy and are able to compete more aggressively on price for certain routes. According to Shutt, "This will be a huge opportunity for Universal Access because we help providers deal with the industry fallout." He adds that Universal Access' systems allow the company to scale profitability. "We spent a lot of money up front," said Shutt.
