Office of African-American Affairs
Peer Advisor Program
2010 - 2011 Application
Dear Applicant:
The Office of African-American Affairs' Peer Advisor Program is excited that you are interested in becoming a Peer Advisor (PA) for the 2010-2011 academic year. There is nothing quite like being a PA!!! Helping others to transition into college life is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. Just "listen" to what some advisees have said about their PA's and the differences they have made:
"I could not have received a better Peer Advisor. Amber is the best. She has taken me multiple places, contacts me often, and has helped me to better understand calculus She is the greatest."
"I love Michael! He's helped me so much since I've been here and made the process of adaptation to college easy. I'm so happy he's my Peer Advisor."
"Rhonda has made my transition to UVA so much better and easier. She is like a big sister I never had but always wanted. We hang out, talk, and spend a lot of time talking about school and everything else. Her knowledge as an upperclassman has helped prepare me for what is yet come. I know without a doubt I would not have adjusted to UVA without her."
And then, there is the other side of peer advising. It's not just about giving, peer advising is also about receiving.
"Being a Peer Advisor has benefited me in many ways. Academically, I have seen my grades get even higher each semester since I became a Peer Advisor. All of the suggestions for academic success that we learn to pass on to our advisees have really helped me as wellPsychologically, this program allows me to have a whole other family which I can turn toI have met so many wonderful people that I would have likely never gotten to know in other settings. Seeing the smiling face of a fellow PA or an advisee can be enough to brighten anyone's day."
Yes, there is nothing quite like being an Office of African-American Affairs' Peer Advisor. The OAAA staff, current Peer Advisors, and I are all excited about your interest in joining us. Please take your time reading the application. Follow directions and put your "best foot forward," responding completely and thoroughly. The written application determines who will proceed to the second phase of the Selections process, the interview. Do not let poorly developed responses keep you from moving ahead.
