Another focal point of downtown is the 3-story brick with its cast-iron exterior stairway. Today it appropriately houses an antiques store, but some townsfolk remember back to the days when it was Smith's, originally a dry goods store. Built in 1888 by Elias Thomas, the handsome brick building anchors the corner of Broadway and Calumet and sits diagonally across from Thomas Park.

The former New York Central passenger depot sits west of Thomas Park, formerly known as Railroad Park.
West of the old passenger depot sits the railroad's former freight station.
Originally built of wood in 1852, the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Depot was rebuilt with brick in 1914 after a re destroyed the original a year earlier. Train passenger service on the New York Central ceased in 1964, Today the depot serves as the ofces of the Duneland Chamber of Commerce, and in summer, as a backdrop to the popular European Market. West of the old passenger depot sits the railroad's former freight station.
