Growing the Program
BringingMakeASplashtomorekidswillkeepchildrenwithspecialneedssafe,give themalifelongleisureactivityandkeepJoey'slaughteralive.JPMF'sgrowthin FairfaxCountyspeaksforitself3,175individualswithdisabilitieshave"madea splash"since2000!In2007,theYMCAofPinellasPark,FloridaandLoudonCounty, VAadoptedMakeASplashProgram.JPMFhasbeencarefullycreatingthetools,like therecentlycompletedProgramandActivityGuidesandnewgrantprogram,sothe MakeASplashcanbeofferedinevenmorelocations.Anewpartnershipwith SafekidsInternationalwillbehelpingJPMFgetMakeASplashfundingandprogram materialsintothehandsofmanyotherorganizationswithsimilargoals:tokeepkids safearoundwaterandmakeourworldbetterforpeopleofallabilities.
Building the Program
Throughmanyhoursofpoolexperience,theprogram evolvedintoaspeciIiccurriculumdeIinedby5basic safetyrules.TheSafetyRules(right)teachkidshowtobe safeandhavefuninandaroundwater.Thesimplicityof theSafetyRulesenabletheprogramtobeadaptedtoa widespectrumofdisabilitiesandages.Foreachrule, JPMFhasdesignedanarrayofaccompanyingactivities, playfulcharactersandmethodsforinstruction.In2008, JPMFpublishedaProgramGuideandActivityguidefor MakeASplashsothatthisuniquecurriculum,whichhas metsomuchsuccessinFairfaxcounty,couldbemodeled innewregions.
