Making a Special Splash with JPMF
SharingJoey'sloveofwaterwithotherchildrenlikehimthroughan adaptedaquaticsprogramwasanaturalchoiceforJoeyPizzano MemorialFund(JPMF).InpartnershipwithFairfaxCounty,JPMF's conceptofawatersafetyprogramforindividualswithdisabilities couldtakeshape.InFall2000,JPMFIirstpilotedawaterskillsand safetyprogramcalled"MakeASplash"throughtheFairfaxCounty CommunityandRecreationServicesSaturdayLeisureprogram.The program,whichassistedingettingparticipantstothepoolandadded aspecialfocusonsafety,wasembracedenthusiasticallybythe community.Within3yearsMakeASplash,wasstandingonitsown andbeingofferedyearround.

Overtheyears,theimpactoftheMakeaSplashprogramhas drawnpraisefromparents,recreationspecialistsandthe communityatlarge.TheNationalAssociationofCounties, FairfaxCountyBoardofSupervisors,PrinceGeorge'sCountyand FairfaxCountyCommunityandRecreationServiceshavehonored JPMFforitseffortsenhancingthelivesofindividualswith disabilities,promotingvolunteerismanddemonstratinggreat partnershipwithexistingpublicprograms.
